Why we ask you to confirm your email

The ReviewFolk team · · 2 min read

When you post a review on ReviewFolk, it saves instantly and you can see it on the page. Then we send you an email with a single link. Click it, and your review goes public and counts towards the score.

People sometimes ask why we don't skip that step. There are three reasons.

It makes fake reviews more work

Writing a fake review takes a minute. Writing five hundred takes a script. Confirming five hundred different email addresses, each with a working inbox, takes a lot more work. That is enough of a hurdle that many people give up.

It lets you fix or delete your review later

The link in that email is also your key to the review. Use it to edit what you wrote if the company sorts out your problem, or to delete the review entirely. No account and no password needed.

It gives one review per person per business

We allow one review per email address per business. If you try to review the same company again, we email you the link to update your existing review instead. That keeps one angry (or very happy) person from dominating a page.

What we do with your email

  • It's never shown publicly. Only the display name you choose appears on your review.
  • Businesses can't see it. They can reply to your review in public, but they don't get your address.
  • We don't send newsletters unless you ask for them.

If you don't click the link within 7 days, we delete the unconfirmed review and the email address that came with it.

Why not phone numbers or accounts?

Phone verification costs money per message and shuts out people who don't want to share their number. Full accounts add a password, a sign-up form and another thing to forget. An email link is the lightest check that still works, and it gets you from star rating to posted review in under a minute.
