How we check reviews

What we verify, what we don’t, and the rules we follow. In plain terms, so you can judge how far to trust what you read.

Who runs ReviewFolk

ReviewFolk is run by SpillHosting AS. You can reach us at hello@reviewfolk.com.

Every review must be confirmed

  • After you write a review, we email a link to your address. The review goes public and counts towards the score only once you click it.
  • Unconfirmed reviews are deleted after 7 days, together with the email address.
  • There is at most one review per email address per company.
  • The email address is never shown publicly and companies can’t see it.

What we don’t check

We don’t verify that the reviewer actually bought from the company. “Verified” only means the author controls the email address they gave. We don’t ask for receipts, order numbers or any proof of purchase, and we don’t fact-check what each review says. Reviews are the opinions of the people who wrote them.

Limits and spam checks

  • One connection can post at most 6 reviews an hour.
  • The form has a hidden field that only bots fill in. Those submissions are set aside.
  • We store a one-way hash of the IP address to enforce the limits. It can’t be turned back into the address.
  • Anyone can report a review, limited to 20 reports an hour per connection.

Reports and moderation

A moderator reviews each report against the published guidelines. Every action, whether a review is removed, restored or the reports dismissed, is logged. When a review is removed, a reason from the guidelines is recorded and the author gets an email explaining why. The author can reply to ask us to look again.

What companies can and can’t do

  • Companies can reply publicly to reviews and report them for moderation.
  • They can’t remove, edit or hide reviews, and they can’t pay to have them removed.
  • We never remove a review for being negative, or because a company disagrees with it.

Order and score

  • A company page shows the newest reviews first. You can sort by most helpful, highest or lowest rating.
  • The score is the plain average of all confirmed reviews, whatever language they’re written in. It’s shown next to the number of reviews.
  • Replies from the company and reviews still waiting for confirmation don’t affect the score.

Paying for reviews, or rewarding them, is not allowed, whether for a positive review or for any review at all. Reviews like that can be removed under the guidelines. ReviewFolk is currently free for businesses, and nobody can buy a better position or fewer negative reviews.
